Brandon Jacobs (San Francisco 49ers)

49ers agreed to terms with Brandon Jacobs, formerly of the Giants, on a one-year contract.
Jacobs is joining Randy Moss and former Giants teammate Mario Manningham as offensive additions in San Francisco. The 49ers will remain a run-dominant offense, with Jacobs perhaps handling the majority of the short-yardage and goal-line work, putting a dent in Frank Gore's fantasy value. Should Gore miss time, though, the more explosive Kendall Hunter would remain the back to own. Anthony Dixon appears to be the odd man out of the backfield picture.

Alex Smith contract negotiations 
According to the Associated Press, Alex Smith's new three-year deal with the 49ers contains $16.5 million in guarantees and could climb as high as $33 million.
Even as they held all of the leverage, the 49ers gave in quite a bit. While Smith is still likely to earn $8 million per season, the guarantees went up from a reported $10 million in the standing offer. It's fair to wonder if the Niners will regret not going with Colin Kaepernick and a veteran backup rather than overpaying for mediocrity.

Manningham's market was slow developing, but rapidly accelerated once the Rams appeared to be on the verge of landing the Giants' former No. 3 receiver. Somewhat incredibly, that could be his role in San Francisco, though that would be contingent on Michael Crabtree taking another step forward and Randy Moss showing little rust after sitting out in 2011. Manningham's fantasy outlook will depend largely on who's under center for the Niners in 2012. If it's Alex Smith, a receiver who struggled to maintain value in 10-12 team leagues last season could fall off the map. If it's Peyton Manning, he could best his career-best line of 60/944/9 from 2010.

The 49ers have confirmed they will work out free agent Randy Moss on Monday.
The word comes straight from team owner Jed York, who also revealed coach Jim Harbaugh will be the one throwing to Moss during his tryout. That could make it awfully hard for the front office to say no if Harbaugh likes what he sees and pushes for Moss' signing.

If any coach in the league can keep Moss in check, it's Jim Harbaugh. And he's probably going to need to at some point, especially if the Niners re-sign weak-armed, tentative Alex Smith. Moss can still run fast in a straight line, but if recent history is any indication, he's not going to fight for poorly thrown downfield passes. In fantasy terms, it's a weak fit for Moss' fantasy potential. Harbaugh engineers a run-first offense, and Moss will probably be lucky to catch 50 balls assuming he plays 16 games.
